This afternoon I had the joy of being part of a cause close to my heart, cleaning up Jhb CBD not necessarily the entire CBD section but the municipal offices welcome area and planting flowers there. Our city needs a much needed revamp and consinstency in being clean which is something we all contribute towards.
I am one of the Team Leaders under the “Lead Me as I Lead You Movement” founded by a friend and as part of supporting the Joburg Mayor’s campaign called “Aresebetseng” we participated in a clean up.
I have always said great leaders serve and truly it is an experience that keeps one humble. Everytime you meet new people you learn about them , the new environment you are in and possibly it may also lead to creating new relationships so in a way you are networking indirectly.
My Mom is a fan of flowers and roses and growing up we had so many of them inside and outside our home and you won’t guess who had the responsibility of watering them at least once a week? I hated the whole exercise. My least favorite plant was the one she called “the money maker”. It is so much work plus the sun and I are not exactly best buddies. In the midst of all this what was beautiful was the end product when the flowers had bloomed. It sure was a beautiful sight.
Planting these flowers today and meeting other young women in the process made me realize :
1. How important it is to show up and honor a commitment you make
2. Always be open minded and willing to try out new things. I am not a huge fan of flowers neither do I draw any pleasure in nurturing them. I am not patient but here I was enjoying the whole experience.
3. When you participate in a charity campaign always yourself is this truly serving my community?
4. Team work makes the work look great. I believe we had fun and working together as strangers who just met today.
5.
As the work continues I hope lives are also transformed if not inspired . May we all look after our environments and keep them clean. Let’s also teach our children and youth not to litter.
