How I lost an opportunity with Hillbrow Radio

Last year I embraced that I belong on radio and if it meant that dream will materialize at 40 or whenever it does I will not stop pursuing it . I became comfortable affirming myself in this pursuit and owning it.

Today I want to share with you a recent disappointment that I encountered. I share some of my dreams with friends. I do it for a couple of reasons but over time I have realised that genuine and loving friends become the real stake holders of your passion or purpose. They look out for you when opportunities arise, remind you of your value and contribution to society and cheer you on so you can rise above any obstacle and try again.

A friend of mine shared a radio opportunity that was available. . She was so excited she went ahead and made time to join me for the interviews/auditions. I thought that so sweet and amazing of her and I looked forward to the day.

The interview or auditions were on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived there just about 30 minutes or so from the set time. As someone who has entered quite a few of these sort of interviews in the media space I knew there would be a long queue.

We joined the queue and luckily for us the table we sat on had no one so we had a bit of privacy so we could chat and have fun. One can never know how long they can be in these auditions. We took a couple of selfies. I definitely insisted we use her iPhone because it captures beautiful pics during the day. If you are into blogging, vlogging etc you would understand why this is key.

After being the queue for an hour and a half I finally saw the judges and I believed I had aced the interview. I was happy with my delivery and did not question myself at all. Infact I was not anxious at all. If I made the cut I was to expect a call from the station the following day.

After the interview we went to a local food outlet that was serving Nigerian food because she had been craving some “egusi”. Luckily for her my tongue is now familiar with Nigerian food so it was definitely a YES from me. It was a great Saturday afternoon that ended very well.

I was expecting a phone call that Sunday afternoon but it never came. I didn’t know whether to call them and ask if I made it and if I didn’t what was it that they didn’t like me or I just totally sucked? It’s always crucial to ask such things so that you can improve and get better for the next opportunity. Unfortunately I did not call them and by the end of the day I knew I did not make the cut.

This experience taught me that you always have someone routing for you. Enjoy it and appreciate it.

It taught me that be always willing to put your money where your mouth is. I have been hesitant in chasing this dream for a while but when I finally made the decision to do so I was willing to take any and every chance that allowed me to grow.

I also appreciated the opportunity. The universe does give us what we ask for but sometimes we may not be ready for it or a bigger and better one is coming BUT the key lesson is to show gratitude and grab it regardless of the outcome.

Lastly getting over a disappointment is like learning how to bake. Don’t look at me like that. I won’t say it’s like riding a bike or learning to swim because those are things I am not familiar with. So let’s just agree that baking is perfect example. You will make a mess the first time. The cupcakes may flop or burn but the sooner you try again and commit to getting better the great the learning experience will be plus the product or outcome . It’s okay to fail or lose.

Never fear trying again. Like Beyone says “I see it , I want it. I work hard till I own it”.
