With over 8 million viewers , Generations is one of SA’s loved and watched soapies. What drove Vusi Mvundla and his management team to fire an entire cast made up of leading characters is shocking and unheard of but welcome to Africa, where things like this are possible.
The SABC announced on Monday that 16 actors who had embarked on a strike had been fired. The national broadcaster’s spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said the termination followed a call by both parties for the actors to return for recordings. The cast claimed that the broadcaster as well as the production company MMSV had failed to deliver on promises it made to them during their strike last year, this is according to Times Live.
As a viewer Generations lost the plot a long time ago and I stopped following it ages ago. I respect the actors for staying away and standing up for their rights. It is about time people respected this industry and appreciated the talent South Africa has to offer. I would rather pay DSTv subscriptions and watch my Isibaya and Sinners and Saints than settle for paying a Tv License when SABC is already failing us when it comes to content.
I think this could be a great opportunity for change and hopefully the story line and make some sense but at the same time don’t these actors have rights? Do they not belong to a Union that can guard against such? Even though he has the sole rights for Generations is he allowed to do this? This is people’s live hood we are talking about. I hope there is a better resolve to this soon.
