#HeadWrapDay

Did you know there was a time in the 1800s when women of color were not allowed to wear their hair in public? Apparently black women back then were too gorgeous and styled their hair in a unique way with feathers etc such that their so called masters found them to be so attractive and i guess naturally they became a threat to the white women around them. The head wrap was also used as a sign of enslavement to separate the black women from the white women so as to show who was superior.

What these rules were meant to do was try to curtail the growing influence of the free black population and keep the social order of the time.

A head wrap symbolizes a lot of things in our African culture. It is a symbol of courage . As Africans our cultures are similar hence every woman in Africa is familiar with the head wrap tradition. It is not something specific to a certain group of people. I am particularly fond of the Southern Africa style of head wrapping and the Nigerian “gele” style. In my culture a woman also wears a head wrap to show respect to her in-laws especially at her wedding or family funerals and gatherings.

In the 21st century all the head wrap culture has evolved and women are free to interpret how they want to wear the head wrap and what it means to them. The head wrap culture is also something a mother teaches to her daughter and passes down that to her. I thank God my Mom taught me the different ways in which a head wrap is worn. Nowadays a woman can wear a head wrap to the office as well as at any casual events in her life. The modern Africa woman evolves every day and as she grows so should her style and way of dressing.

HAPPY #HEADWRAPDAY friends!!!!

I love the colour of the print used on this image by Joburg based attorney Zoe. In African print style this is a classic print because it blends in with colours like black, white and navy…
