Step into your uniqueness : Danai Gurira’s Speech

Congratulations to Danai Gurira on her Star Power Award at the recent BET #BlackGirlsRock Awards. Wow Wow!!! Her speech has just elevated and heightened my level of consciousness. This is the kind of stuff made for the weekend especially a Sunday. It is meant for the soul.

I love how she says i love being black and if i had to be anything else i would be jealous. Danai is an American actress and playwright. She is  best known for her role as Michonne on  an AMC television horror drama series. Danai possesses a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and has also earned a Master of Fine Arts in acting, from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Her award reminds me of my Interview the other day with Jabulile Buthelezi when i asked her what her favorite part about herself was and she said being black. These are the young black women i am surrounded by, women who rock. Women who inspire and motivate as they move along in their journey. Black women rock and those of us who are enlightened do have a responsibility to share that and also make the path ahead lighter for those who are still in the dark and do not see or acknowledge the power they possess.

Along the journey to self actualization there will be challenges and instead of walking away let us be brave and hold on and know that we have been called to greatness. Whether that greatness appears on a Magazine cover or not it does not mean you matter less. Greatness waits for no praises if they come along , great if not move on along continue fighting for what you believe in. My sister and Mentor Lerato Pooe always used to encourage me by her wise words ” Gold is still gold even if it shines less” and i share those words with you wherever you are.

Danai’s speech reminds me of how much power the black girl has and how it is all up to her to harness it and share it. Upon the ladder to greatness we have to choose what we listen to and how we allow ourselves to choose how we want to be defined. I have the power to love me .  I have the power to choose me and my dreams. I have the power to be kind , to be loving and to uplift another….What is your STAR POWER?…
